Game Notes

Boilermakers fend off the Cardinals 27-19.

Purdue withstands 4 Stanford possessions inside the 30 in the 4th quarter to preserve the win. The Boilermakers survive the 1st threat when Mike Dotterer fumbles into the end zone from the 1 and then finally as time runs out following 2 passes into the end zone. The Cardinals also fumble inside the 20 on the 2nd of the 4 threats.

John Elway throws for 418 yards and 1 TD, completing 33-of-44, but his 2 throws into the end zone from the 9 end up incomplete in the final 9 seconds. Elway had Chris Dressel open on the 1st throw but Tim Seneff reaches in and breaks up the pass. Seneff recovered Dotterer's fumble earlier in the 4th quarter.

Stanford scores on Dotterer's 3-yard run on the opening possession. However, Jimmy Smith returns the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a TD before the PAT is blocked. Smith rushes for 91 yards and 2 TDs. His 2nd 1-yard TD run gives Purdue a 20-10 lead in the 2nd quarter before Mark Harmon ends the 1st half with a 59-yard FG for the Cardinals.

Stanford strikes in the 3rd quarter with a 1-yard TD toss by Elway to Vincent White, but the PAT is blocked, leaving the Boilermakers ahead by 1. Purdue answers with Scott Campbell's 28-yard TD pass to Steve Bryant. Campbell, taking over as the starting QB following the graduation of Mark Herrmann, hits 14 of his 1st 16 passes, finishing 14-of-18 for 177 yards.
