Game Notes

#2 Nittany Lions claim victory and National Championship over #1 Bulldogs 27-23.

Penn State surges early and withstands a rally by Georgia to capture its 1st crown under Joe Paterno. Todd Blackledge leads the way throwing for 228 yards and a very big TD in the 4th quarter.

After the Bulldogs had cut a 20-3 deficit to 20-17, Blackledge beats the blitz, hitting Gregg Garrity with a 48-yard TD pass. Blackledge had completions of 33 and 27 yards on the opening drive that Curt Warner capped with a 2-yard TD run. Warner finishes with 117 yards and 2 TDs despite battling cramps for much of the 4th quarter.

Appearing on the ropes, Georgia rallied in the closing minutes of the 1st half for a 10-yard TD pass from John Lastinger to Herman Archie to cut it to 20-10. The Bulldogs started the 2nd half with a 1-yard TD run by Herschel Walker, who rushes for 103 yards in his final college game.

Georgia draws within 27-23 on Lastinger's 9-yard TD pass to Clarence Kay. The Bulldogs' try for 2 fails, and Penn State is able to run out the clock after they kick deep with 3:54 left.
