Iowa suffers 5 turnovers, including 4 fumbles by star RB Ronnie Harmon, setting the stage for UCLA to pull off the upset behind freshman Eric Ball, who rushes for 227 yards and 4 TDs on 22 carries. Chuck Long throws for 319 yards and 1 TD, and Harmon accounts for 157 total yards.
The Bruins break the game open in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, breaking a 10-10 tie when Ball runs for a 40-yard TD run and then a 6-yarder for a 24-10 halftime lead. After Long starts Iowa's 2nd half with a 6-yard TD run, Matt Stevens hits Mike Sherrard with a 6-yard TD pass, and Ball scores his 4th TD on a 32-yard run to give UCLA control of the game.
