Keith Woodside carries 23 times for 96 yards and the defense makes 1 TD hold up with the help of 3 FGs by Scott Slater. Slater hits a 36-yard FG and 50-yard FG on successive drives in the 4th quarter to stretch out a 10-7 lead to 16-7.

Slater's 1st FG breaks a scoreless deadlock and then Kevin Murray hits Rod Bernstine with a 23-yard TD pass w/ 1:04 left in the 1st half. Andrew Anderson pulls Southern Miss to within 3 points, taking a keeper around end for a 3-yard TD run early in the 4th quarter.
