Game Notes

#6 Tigers tie #4 Orangemen 16-16 at the end.

Pat Dye makes the controversial decision to opt for Win Lyle's tying 30-yard FG w/ :01 left rather than going for a win, especially after no attempts were made to push the ball down field or into the end zone on the possession. Dye makes a mush-mouthed attempt to justify the decision after the game, but it actually sounds 10x worse than the actual decision.

Syracuse had tied the game and then gone ahead on FGs of 32 and 38 yards by Tim Vesling in the 4th quarter. Auburn had gone up 13-10 on the 2nd of Lyle's 3 FGs early in the 4th quarter as defenses dominate much of the game.

Auburn strikes early with a 17-yard TD pass from Jeff Burger to Lawyer Tillman, who catches 6 passes for 125 yards. However, the Tigers' potent running game produces just 41 yards.

Meanwhile, Syracuse matches the early TD when Don McPherson hits Deval Glover with a 12-yard TD pass in the 2nd quarter. McPherson goes 11-of-21 for 140 yards while adding 31 yards on the ground.
