Game Notes

Trojans upset the #5 Bruins 17-13 as big plays and a disputed TD dominate the story.

Southern Cal rallies from a 13-0 deficit in the 2nd half, going ahead following the 1st of Mark Carrier's 2 INTs on a 33-yard TD pass from Rodney Peete to Erik Affholter w/ 7:59 to play. Affholter appears to be out of the end zone as he catches the bobbling football. The play stands and the lead holds up when Carrier ends UCLA's final possession with his 2nd INT to go with an earlier fumble recovery.

Peete throws for a career-high 304 yards and 2 TDs, the first coming on a 6-yarder to Randy Tanner earlier in the 4th quarter. However, its a defensive play by Peete that may have saved the Trojans. USC threatens to cut into UCLA's 10-0 lead late in the 1st half when Eric Turner picks off Peete's deflected pass and returns it 89 yards before Peete drags him down as time runs out in the 1st half.

The Trojans earlier missed scoring chances on a missed FG and a fumble at the goal line on 4th down. USC also has a long TD pass negated by a delay-of-game penalty.

USC's upset sends the Trojans to the Rose Bowl instead of the Bruins.
