Notre Dame withstands a determined effort by Stanford, a 3-touchdown underdog, to win its 17th straight. The Irish take the lead for good on Anthony Johnson's 1-yard TD run in the 3rd quarter. Craig Hentrich adds a pair of FGs in the 4th quarter to help secure the win.

The Cardinal had tied the game 14-14 on Steve Smith's 2-yard TD pass to Ed McCaffrey and Tommy Vardell's run for a 2-point conversion in the 3rd quarter. Smith hits 39-of-68 passes for 282 yards and 1 TD.

Johnson rushes for 75 yards and 2 TDs to lead Notre Dame.
