Desmond Howard makes an early Heisman statement with 2 TDs, including a show-stopping diving 25-yard TD catch on a 4th-and-1 in the 4th quarter to give Michigan a 24-14 lead. Howard lays out to pull in Elvis Grbac's toss after Notre Dame had cut a 17-0 deficit to 17-14.

Howard scores on a 29-yard reverse in the 2nd quarter for a 10-0 lead and then Ricky Powers adds a 16-yard TD run. Powers rushes for 164 yards on 38 carries. Grbac hits 20 of 22 passes for 195 yards with Howard catching 6 for 74 yards.

The Irish right themselves with Rick Mirer hitting Jerome Bettis for a 3-yard TD pass late in the 1st half, and then follows with a 35-yard TD pass to Tony Smith in the 3rd quarter.
