Miami's big plays overcome and uneven performance to finish off San Diego State. Gino Torretta throws for career-best 485 yards and 4 TDs to lead the Canes while Horace Copeland catches 6 passes for 141 yards and 2 TDs.

After Darryl Williams' 27-yard INT return gives Miami a 10-0 lead late in the 1st, Torretta hits Copeland for a 66-yard TD pass on 3rd-and-35. They later combine on a 30-yard TD pass while Torretta hits Kevin Williams for a 42-yard TD and Martin Patton for a 69-yard TD.

Marshall Faulk becomes the 1st freshman to win the national rushing title, gaining 154 yards on 27 carries to raise his season total to 1,429 yards in 9 games.
