Game Notes

Jayhawks rally to beat the #25 Cougars 23-20.

Kansas converts 2 big pass plays, a loaded defense and missed opportunities by BYU to a comeback win. Chip Hilleary scores on a 1-yard run and then runs it in for a 2-point conversion to tie it 20-20 in the 4th quarter after hitting Rodney Harris with a deep pass setting up a 1st-and-goal situation. Earlier, Harris scores on a 74-yard pass from fellow receiver Matt Gay.

The Jayhawks put together a long-time consuming drive in the 4th quarter setting up Dan Eichloff's 48-yard FG w/ 2:57 for the winning score. The Cougars get a 94-yard return for a TD by Hema Heimuli on the opening kickoff, but BYU's special teams become a problem after that as David Lauder misses 3 FGs.

The Kansas defense, featuring Dana Stubblefield, Gilbert Brown, Kwamie Lassiter and Gerald McBurrows harrasses 4th-string QB Tom Young. Stubblefield sacks Steve Young's little brother 3 times, as the Jayhawks record 6 sacks, and also score a safety when Chris Maumalanga stuffs Jamal Willis in the end zone.
