Game Notes

#2 Buckeyes bury the #20 Hawkeyes with a brief flurry.

Tied 3-3 in the 1st quarter, Ohio State converts a blocked punt and 2 turnovers into 3 scores and a 24-3 lead. Kevin Griffin recovers a blocked punt in the end zone to put the Buckeyes ahead. Stanley Jackson follows with a 16-yard TD pass to David Boston after Damon Moore picks Matt Sherman on Iowa's next possession. Then the Hawkeyes botch a short kickoff setting up Jackson's 3-yard TD pass to Joey Lumpkin.

Joe Montgomery, who rushes for 160 yards, adds a 1-yard TD run and Moore adds 2 more INTs in the 1st half. After Sedrick Shaw fumbles on the Hawkeyes' 1st play of the 2nd half, Pepe Pearson scores on a 4-yard run to give Ohio State a 38-6 lead. The Hawkeyes pull to within 38-26 midway through the 4th quarter but can close the gap no more.
