Southern Cal takes to the air with a stalled running game to beat Houston. John Allred catches 10 passes for 103 yards, a school record for receptions by a tight end, while Brad Otton throws for 290 yards and 2 TDs.

The Trojans start fast, taking a 10-0 lead on Otton's 35-yard TD pass to Billy Miller in the 1st quarter. However, the Cougars claw back, trailing 17-9 before missing a pair of FGs and failing to convert prime scoring opportunities. Southern Cal finally puts Houston away in the 4th quarter when Otton hits Miller for a 32-yard TD pass and a 23-9 lead.
