Texas prevails after Texas Tech's hopes die when Zebbie Lethridge's pass into the end zone is batted down on the final play. The Longhorns jump to a 28-3 lead before the Red Raiders storm back and make a contest of it until the very end in a battle of big plays and big numbers. The teams combine for 1,183 yards total offense, 277 yards in penalties and 5 plays of 60 yards or more.

Texas rolls up 336 yards rushing, led by Shon Mitchell with 150 yards and Ricky Williams with 145 yards. Mitchell has a 65-yard TD run to start the scoring and Williams has a 75-yarder to make it 28-3. James Brown adds 239 yards and 1 TD pass.

Meanwhile, Byron Hanspard rushes for 132 yards while Lethridge accounts for 364 yards and 2 TDs passing and 72 yards and 2 TDs rushing. Donnie Hart catches 5 passes for 241 yards, including TDs of 86 and 39 yards.
