Michigan State uses a sledgehammer offense to send Notre Dame to a 1-2 start. Marc Renaud and Sedrick Irvin combine for 218 yards rushing for the Spartans.

Renaud's 51-yard return on the opening kickoff sets up Todd Schultz's 5-yard TD pass to Josh Keur. Schultz adds a 1-yard TD sneak later in the 1st quarter to open a 14-0 lead. The Irish's lone score is set up by an INT in Michigan State territory that leads to a 7-yard TD pass from Ron Powlus to Bobby Brown.
