Game Notes

#1 Wolverines claim first national title in 50 years with a 21-16 win over the #7 Cougars.

Michigan hangs on with its stellar defense and big plays from Brian Griese. Washington State's Ryan Leaf throws for 331 yards and 1 TD, but is unable to complete a final-minute rally. Meanwhile, Griese claims MVP honors with 251 yards and 3 TDs.

Griese answers an early TD by the Cougars with a 53-yard TD pass to Tai Streets in the 2nd quarter. After Washington State goes up 13-7 on Shawn Tims' 14-yard TD run, followed by a blocked PAT, Griese and Streets connect again on a 58-yard TD pass to take a 14-13 lead.

Griese's 23-yard TD pass to Jerome Tuman early in the 4th opens a 21-13 lead for Michigan. Streets catches 4 passes for 127 yards and 2 TDs, while Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson picks off Leaf in the end zone in the 2nd quarter and picks up critical first downs with a run and a reception.
