Game Notes

#3 Volunteers struggle past the Commodores 17-10.

Tennessee is plagued by mistakes and Vanderbilt's stingy defense, but prevails in the end thanks to a strong defensive effort of its own. The Commodores force 3 turnovers, but frequently turn the ball back over or fail to capitalize.

Peyton Manning hits 12-of-27 for 159 yards and 1 TD and runs for 1 more in his final home game, however, its Jamal Lewis that carries the Volunteers, rushing for 196 yards on 36 carries. Manning puts Tennessee ahead 7-3 with a 33-yard TD pass to Jermaine Copeland in the 2nd quarter and then stretches the lead to 17-3 in the 3rd quarter scoring on a bootleg from the 1 after a play fake.

Vanderbilt draws within a score on Jared McGrath's 14-yard TD run late in the 3rd quarter, but is unable to strike a tying blow after that.
