Arizona starts its season in winning fashion as Chris McAlister returns the opening kickoff 100 yards for a TD. Keith Smith comes off the bench to throw for 218 yards and 2 TDs to awaken the Wildcats' offense.

Hawaii had drawn within 7-6 on Dan Robinson's 25-yard TD pass to Dwight Carter in the 2nd quarter. However, Arizona answers with a 17-yard TD pass from Smith to Jeremy McDaniel on the next possession. Smith extends the lead to 21-6 in the 3rd quarter with a 7-yard TD pass to Dennis Northcutt.
