Dan Nystrom hits a 32-yard FG as time expires to give Minnesota the huge upset over unbeaten Penn State. The Gophers were down to their last hope when Arland Bruce catches a deflected pass at the 13-yard on for a 27-yard reception on 4th-and-16 w/ 1:22 left.

Minnesota had led briefly in the 4th quarter when Billy Cockerham connects with Thomas Hamner on 49-yard TD pass, but the Lions regain the lead on Travis Forney's 3rd FG. Cockerham throws for 277 yards and 2 TDs, and runs for another.
