Game Notes

Lakeland Dreadnaughts survive for a 45-42 win over St. Thomas Aquinas in 2 OTs to capture their 3rd straight state title.

Lakeland beats the Raiders for the 3rd straight time in the finals when DT John Brown (Florida/academic problems) stops junior RB Jeremiah Harden (Syracuse transfer/FIU) 1 inch away from the goalline on 4th down to preserve the win after Matt Roddenberry hit a 20-yard FG on the Dreadnaughts' possession in the 2nd OT. The dramatic finish follows a 21-point comeback by St. Thomas in the final 1:55 of regulation.

Chris Rainey (Florida) rushes for 287 yards and 3 TDs, and appears to have sealed the Lakeland win with a 55-yard TD run w/ 2:25 left in the game. However, the Raiders drive back down the field and start the comeback with an 8-yard TD run by QB Wesley Carroll (Mississippi State transfer/FIU) w/ 1:55 to play. After recovering an onside kick, Harden, who rushes for 171 yards, scores on a 4-yard run. Following another recovering of an onside kick, Carroll hits WR Leonard Hankerson (Miami) with a 14-yard TD pass to tie it w/ :38 left.
