Game Notes

Bears prevail over the Giants, weather 12-9 in OT.

Chicago clinches its 1st playoff berth since 1963 when Bob Thomas converts a 28-yard FG on a snow and ice covered field w/ :03 left in overtime. Thomas had missed his 2 previous attempts and had a PAT blocked previously after making a 32-yarder in the 1st quarter.

New York had outgained and outplayed the Bears through much of the contest but dropped too many passes and ailed to convert TD opportunities. Chicago had gone ahead 9-6 on Robin Earl's 4-yard TD pass in the 4th quarter.

However, after Thomas' PAT was blocked, the Giants drive for a 27-yard FG by Joe Danelo with :41 left in regulation. Walter Payton had entered the game with an outside chance at breaking the 2,000-yard mark for the season, but struggles on the icy field, leaving Bob Avellini to provide much of the offense. Avellini hits 17-of-26 for 186 yards.

The Giants ride their running game with Larry Csonka rushing for 100 yards and Doug Kotar adding 95.
