Game Notes

Chargers beat the Chiefs 29-23 in OT.

San Diego wins it on Dan Fouts' 14-yard TD pass to John Jefferson as time expires in OT. The 2 teams had opportunities to win it earlier in overtime but fumbled deep in the other's territory. Kansas City had tied the game on Jan Stenerud's 47-yard FG with :01 left in regulation after the Chargers had just gone ahead 23-20 with less than 2 minutes to play on Rolf Benirschke's 28-yard FG.

Regulation became a contest of running games with San Diego surprisingly matching the Chiefs' Wing-T offense despite a depleted Kansas City secondary. Lydell Mitchell rushes for 144 yards and Hank Bauer adds a pair of short TD runs. Jefferson steps up late in the game, catching 7 passes for 130 yards and 2 TDs.

After falling behind by 7 points twice, the Chiefs draw even on TD runs by Arnold Morgado. Morgado carries 29 times for 115 yards while Ted McKnight and Tony Reed combine for another 91 yards rushing.
