Game Notes

Bears get the breaks to beat the Falcons 13-7, snapping an 8-game losing streak.

Chicago converts a blocked punt into the decisive score, helping to stop a hot Atlanta team that had won 5 straight. Walter Payton dives over the top for a 1-yard TD in the 3rd quarter, giving the Bears a 10-7 lead after Bruce Herron blocks a John James punt, giving Chicago the ball at the 11.

Chicago later adds a 2nd FG by Bob Thomas, and stops 2 Atlanta drives in Bears' territory in the 4th quarter to preserve the win. The Bears are able to win despite going through 3 QBs, and managing just 183 yards offense compared to 344 yards by the Falcons. Steve Bartkowski throws for 215 yards and 1 TD, with Billy Ryckman catching 8 for 107 yards. But the Falcons only manage 1 score on Bartkowski's 7-yard TD pass to Jim Mitchell in the 2nd quarter.
