Game Notes

Eagles hold off the Giants for a 23-17 win on opening day.

Philadelphia withstands early mistakes and a 4th quarter rally to beat New York. The Eagles suffer a turnover and a blocked punt deep in their own end on the 1st 2 series, yet they turn into a FG and an INT by Bill Bergey at the 2. Philadelphia then scores 23 straight points.

Ron Jaworski connects with Harold Carmichael on a pair of TD passes, including a 41-yard that opens a 23-3 lead in the 2nd quarter. Carmichael has 4 catches for 98 yards.

However, Joe Pisarcik is able to shake off 8 dropped passes and rally New York in the 2nd half. He hits Johnny Perkins with a 15-yard TD pass, and then they combine on another from 38 yards in the 4th quarter on what appears to be an incomplete pass ruled as a catch and fumble, recovered in the end zone. Pisarcik finishes 20-of-40 for 274 yards, but is intercepted by Brenard Wilson late to seal the win for the Eagles.
