49ers turn back the Saints 21-14.

San Francisco withstands a fast start and rallying finish by New Orleans. In between the 49ers get 2 big plays by Freddie Solomon and Ronnie Lott to grab the victory.

After Dave Wilson hits Jeff Groth with a 24-yard TD pass in the 1st quarter, San Francisco draws even in the 2nd quarter on Johnny Davis' 6-yard TD run. The 49ers take the lead in the 2nd half when Solomon bounces off several Saints' defenders en route to a 60-yard TD reception from Joe Montana. Lott extends the lead to 21-7 when he returns a tipped pass 29 yards for a TD. The Saints roll up 413 yards, but also suffer 4 turnovers, and manage a late rally on Archie Manning's 9-yard TD pass to Wayne Wilson in the final 2 minutes, but San Francisco recovers the ensuing onside kick.
