San Francisco escapes with the victory when Ronnie Lott picks off Bill Kenney and returns it 83 yards for a TD in the final minute to seal the win as Kansas City was driving for a go-ahead score. The 49ers had erased a 10-3 halftime deficit with a 1-yard TD run by Jeff Moore and 3 2nd-half FGs by Ray Wersching.

Joe Montana throws for 253 yards but also suffers a pair of INTs and 3 sacks. The Chiefs broke a 3-3 tie in the 2nd quarter on Kenney's 41-yard TD pass to Anthony Hancock.
