Game Notes

Lions hold off the Bears 17-10 to ruin Mike Ditka's coaching debut.

Detroit wins a defensive battle, sacking Chicago's passing attack and then converting a critical facemask penalty into a clock-killing drive after Chicago closes to within 17-10 on John Roveto's 42-yard FG. The Lions had extended their lead to 17-7 when Billy Sims scores on a 3-yard run after Gary Danielson enters the game and sparks Detroit's attack.

The Lions manage just 212 yards on offense, but hold Chicago to 154 total yards and sack the Bears' quarterbacks 5 times while holding Walter Payton to just 26 yards with a long gain of 5 yards.
