Game Notes

Chargers beat the Bengals 50-34 in a MNF shootout.

San Diego erupts in the 2nd half as the 2 teams combine to set an NFL record for most combined passing yardage, 883 yards and also become the 1st with both QBs throwing for over 400 yards. Cincinnati's Kenny Anderson hits 40-of-56 for 416 yards and 2 TDs.

However, the Chargers manage more balance, which proves to be the difference in overcoming a 24-17 halftime deficit. Chuck Muncie ties it with a 1-yard TD run capping the opening drive of the 2nd half. Then the defense which slows the Bengals in the 2nd half, gives San Diego the lead sacking Anderson in the end zone for a safety.

The Chargers then sandwich a Bengals' FG with a 38-yard TD pass from Dan Fouts to Wes Chandler and a 48-yard TD run by James Brooks to open a 40-27 lead.

Fouts finishes 25-of-40 for 435 yards and 1 TD. Chuck Muncie adds a 66-yard TD pass to Chandler in the 1st half. Brooks has 105 yards and 3 TDs on 12 carries while Chandler catches 10 passes for a franchise-record 260 yards and 2 TDs. Cris Collinsworth has 9 catches for 156 yards and 1 TD for Cincinnati before departing with a hip injury.
