Detroit @ Tampa Bay

Network: CBS
Announcers: Jim Kelly, John Dockery
Format: DVD (4 disks)
Quality: 7.0
Notes: Includes commercials and halftime... Has more issues than most 'archive' games: Missing 2 plays in 1st quarter for no apparent reason... for 1st 3 disks, color goes in and out, often with additional picture disruption as it goes from color to B&W and back... much of 2nd Q has very significant pic shake and disturbances, not really watchable... Final disk is much better... Grade could be about 8.5 without the issues.

Game Notes

Lions squelch the Bucs for 11-0 win.

Tampa Bay is both punchless and inept in its 1st game without Doug Williams. The Bucs establish a solid resume of sacks, turnovers and blocking penalties, killing whatever good-field position they manage to get. Detroit records 7 sacks against Jerry Golsteyn and Jack Thompson, and forces 3 turnovers.

The Lions get all the offense they would need when Doug English sacks Golsteyn for a safety in the 1st quarter. Eddie Murray then pads the already insurmountable lead with 3 FGs. The Bucs manage no offense beyond a few screen passes as Golsteyn and Thompson struggle.

Neither Billy Sims or James Jones are able to find running room, but Eric Hipple and Gary Danielson split the QB duties and manage enough offense to set up Murray's FGs.
