New England scores on its 1st possession and hangs on to beat New Orleans amid snow, freezing rain and icy and wet conditions. The Patriots manage just 207 yards offense and miss all 3 FG attempts, but manage to force 3 turnovers and deny the Saints on each occasion they threaten to score.

Ricky Smith returns the opening kickoff 57 yards, setting up a 3-yard TD run by Tony Collins. New Orleans loses 2 scoring chances due to fumbles, and give up good starting field position on a 3rd fumble. Mosi Tatupu carries the New England attack, rushing for 128 yards on 21 carries despite the slick surface.
