Lions come up defensively to beat the Falcons 28-17.

Detroit converts 3 turnovers into TDs, including 2 on returns to top Atlanta in the season opener. The Lions capitalize on an interception by Stephen Boyd to take a 21-17 lead on Scott Mitchell's 25-yard TD pass to Herman Moore two plays later. Mitchell and Moore combined on a 43-yard TD pass in the 2nd quarter. Moore finishes with 7 catches for 115 yards.

Detroit had taken a 14-10 lead on Boyd's 42-yard return of a Chris Chandler fumble in the 2nd quarter. The Falcons regain the lead on Jamal Anderson's 1-yard TD run early in the 4th quarter.

After the 2nd Mitchell-to-Moore TD pass, Reggie Brown picks off Chandler on the ensuing series and returns it 38 yards for a TD. Barry Sanders' 2000-yard season starts slowing with just 33 yards on 15 carries.
