Game Notes

49ers turn away the Panthers 27-19.

San Francisco clinches the NFC West with its 10th straight win, unseating the defending champion Carolina. Defense and special teams key the win for the 49ers. The defense picks off 3 passes, setting up two scores and also killing the Panthers' comeback hopes.

Tim McDonald's 1st quarter INT sets up a 1-yard TD run by Steve Young for a 10-0 lead. Young adds a 44-yard TD pass to William Floyd in the 2nd quarter. Then Terry Kirby returns the 2nd half kickoff 101 yards for a TD and 24-6 lead. After Carolina draws within 24-19, Lee Woodall's INT sets up a FG, and Merton Hanks picks off a deep pass by Kerry Collins at the goal line to seal the win.
