Game Notes

Saints strike late as Mike Ditka is triumphant in his return against the Bears, with a 20-17 win.

A punt fest turns into a 4th quarter battle, but New Orleans gets in the final blow when Randal Hill scores on a franchise-best 89-yard TD reception from Heath Shuler on the 1st play following Chicago's go-ahead TD. The two teams combined for 21 punts and 18 penalties with 3rd down conversions being a foreign concept.

However, the Saints grab control of the game with a 49-yard TD run by Mario Bates and a Doug Brien FG in the 3rd quarter giving them a 13-3 lead. The Bears put together one scoring drive resulting in a 1-yard TD run, and convert a fumble into a 10-yard TD drive ending in Raymont Harris' 1-yard TD run. But the ensuing play results in the game-winning TD strike.
