San Diego debuts a new leaf with a win over Buffalo as Doug Christie's 39-yard FG attempt in the final minute hooks left. Ryan Leaf makes his NFL debut, going 16-of-31 for 192 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs. Leaf is able to lead the Chargers on a drive for the go-ahead score on John Carney's 3 FG after a roughing the passer penalty keeps the drive alive.

Leaf's 6-yard TD pass to Bryan Still gives San Diego a 10-0 lead early in the 3rd quarter. However, Doug Flutie replaces Rob Johnson, who suffers a concussion, and leads the Bills to a pair of TD passes to Andre Reed.
