Game Notes

49ers escape with a miraculous 39-38 win over the Giants following a wild 4th quarter and chaotic ending.

San Francisco scores the final 25 points to erase a 38-14 deficit, and then survives a comeback bid by New York when a bad snap on a 41-yard FG attempt with 6 seconds remaining results in a frantic fire drill and incomplete pass with ineligible receivers downfield as time expires. The Giants were trying to respond after Jeff Garcia hits Tai Streets with a 13-yard TD pass w/ 1:00 left.

New York appeared to have the game in hand, shredding the San Francisco defense for TDs on 5 of 6 possessions to take a 35-14 lead. Following a dropped TD pass by Jeremy Shockey, Matt Bryant adds a 21-yard FG for a 38-14 cushion.

However, the blowout turns into the 2nd biggest comeback in playoff history quickly as Garcia catches fire with a TD pass before the end of the 3rd quarter, and then a 14-yard TD run on the 1st play of the 4th quarter. Two-point conversions after both TDs and a 25-yard FG by Jeff Chandler draw the 49ers within 38-33.

Garcia, who throws for 331 yards and 3 TDs, leads San Francisco on the winning drive after taking over with 3:16 to play. Garcia's rally offsets big days by Kerry Collins, who throws for 342 yards and 4 TDs, and Amani Toomer, who catches 8 passes for 136 yards and 3 TDs. Tiki Barber adds 115 yards and 1 TD rushing, while catching 5 passes for 62 yards.
