Game Notes

Panthers survive a late meltdown to beat the Rams 29-23 in 2 OTs.

After blowing an 11-point lead late in the 4th quarter, and then having a winning FG in the 1st OT waved off due to a pre-snap penalty, Carolina finally wins when Jake Delhomme connects with Steve Smith on a 69-yard TD pass on the 1st play of the 2nd OT. St. Louis had also missed a chance to win in the 1st OT when Jeff Wilkins, who made 5 FGs, comes up short on a 53-yard attempt.

Wilkins had been in line to be the hero after recovering an onside kick after the Rams pulled to within 23-20 on Marshall Faulk's 1-yard TD run, and Marc Bulger's 2-point conversion pass to Dane Looker, with 2:39 left in regulation. After Wilkins recovered the ensuing onside kick, he hits a 33-yard FG on the final play of regulation to tie it. Wilkins had connected on a 51-yard FG to give St. Louis a 12-10 lead early in the 3rd quarter.

However, Carolina regains the lead after John Kasay hits 2 of his 3 FGs for a 16-12 edge. Brad Hoover's 7-yard TD run in the 4th quarter puts the Panthers up 23-12.

Bulger throws for 332 yards, but also tosses 3 INTs, including one by Ricky Manning Jr. that sets up the winning TD. Delhomme throws for 290 yards, while Smith has 6 catches for 163 yards.
